Introducing Maine’s Most Endangered Historic Properties

In 1996, Maine Preservation launched a major initiative to raise public awareness of the need to save endangered and threatened historic places and cultural landscapes across Maine.

Today, Maine’s Most Endangered Historic Properties has developed into our signature program. Over the last 11 years, 69 properties and six statewide thematic property types have made our Most Endangered list. 22 of these formerly endangered places have been rescued and 16 are making positive strides toward success. Only six have been lost to demolition.

"Most Endangered" status does not ensure the protection of a site or provide funding; however, it helps, sometimes significantly, to raise local awareness and helps focus the work that often leads to rescue. Our professional staff and Board of Trustees provide leadership and encouragement to support the local rescue of significant historic structures, sites and landscapes across Maine.

Nominations are broadly solicited each spring then reviewed by the Outreach Committee before being presented to the full Board of Trustees for their vote of approval. The criteria is simple: the property must be historically significant, the threat must be compelling, and there must be a strong demonstrated local effort prepared to invest time, energy and money to rescue the historic property.

The stories are inspiring. The needs are great. Your involvement is essential.
