THE MAINE PRESERVATION HERITAGE EDUCATION GRANTS PROGRAM The Maine Preservation Heritage Education Grants Program had its origin as The Jane Carpenter Poliquin Education Grant. In 1997, Bruce Poliquin donated a gift of $2,000 as a memorial to his late wife, a former Trustee of Maine Preservation and an individual who had a strong interest in education and architectural history. In 2000, funding for the program was increased thanks to a generous grant from the Davis Family Foundation. To date, Maine Preservation has awarded 30 heritage education grants amounting to $17,360 to teachers across Maine. Individual grants range from $500 to $750. The program has been highly effective in encouraging "place-based learning" and appreciation of Maine's historic architecture. These grants provide needed funding for innovative opportunities for teachers and students to use the historic fabric of the local community as a living, learning laboratory. The Heritage Education Grants Program uses small amounts of funding to achieve a strong multiplier effect, engaging citizens of all ages in each community in shared activities focused on historic preservation. The current program reaches approximately 2,500 people annually as students work to complete their projects with teams of community residents and specialists, including parents, grandparents, business leaders, public officials, architects, planners, artists, historical societies, archaeologists and photographers. All of these programs involved local research, oral interviews and the internet in varying degrees. On September 18, 2002, during Maine Preservation's Annual Meeting, Bruce Poliquin and his son, Sam, joined Hannah Ostrye, Chairperson of the Education Committee, to acknowledge the recipients of the annual Heritage Education Grants. As each recipient was announced, Sam Poliquin read a short description of the project and distributed grant checks ranging from $500-$750 to the teachers. Projects represented elementary, middle and high schools from northern and southern Maine. HERITAGE EDUCATION RESOURCES Help us link up to a world of knowledge!
