STATEWIDE ORGANIZATIONS AND RESOURCES Maine Preservation is the statewide private nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the irreplaceable architectural heritage, historic places and communities of Maine. Maine Preservation advocates for public policy, announces the annual list of Maine's Most Endangered Historic Properties, provides technical assistance and information to owners of historic buildings, holds preservation easements and provides education funding to teachers through the Jane Carpenter Poliquin Education Grant program. Benefits of membership include the newsletter, Maine Preservation News, discounts to conferences, workshops, events and books published by Maine Preservation, and free copies of A Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Maine. Maine Preservation The Maine Historic Preservation Commission is the state agency that functions as the State Historic Preservation Office in Maine. The Commission is responsible for the identification, evaluation, and protection of Maine's significant cultural resources. The Commission oversees the statewide survey program, nominates properties to the National Register of Historic Places, reviews development activities for their effect on cultural resources, co-ordinates rehabilitation projects under the Preservation Tax Incentives Program, assists local governments in survey work and the design of preservation guidelines, and is involved in a variety of public education activities. Commission The Center for Maine History is an educational non-profit organization, which devotes its resources to the discovery, identification, collection, preservation, and interpretation of materials that document the history of Maine and its people. The Center for Maine History
A Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Maine is an ongoing, joint project of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and Maine Preservation. Since 1984 the Commission and Maine Preservation have published one hundred entries describing the careers of architects and builders who worked in the state during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Each biography is illustrated and includes a list of the architect's buildings. Copies may be ordered from the Maine Historic Preservation Commission or Maine Preservation. Maine Association of Archives and Museums is a statewide organization of people and institutions throughout the state which identifies, collects, interprets, and provides access to materials relating to history and culture. LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS AND RESOURCES Greater Portland Landmarks enriches the quality of life in Portland and surrounding communities by promoting the appreciation, preservation and appropriate use of historic structures and landscapes. Greater Portland Landmarks The McLaughlin Foundation preserves the home, garden and grounds of the late Bernard McLaughlin. In keeping with Bernard's tradition and belief that gardens are for everyone's pleasure, the garden is maintained open and free to the public seven days a week during the growing season. The McLaughlin Foundation Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to the preservation of buildings possessing architectural or historic merit. SPI's present and future mission is to preserve and maintain the Bath area's (Bath, Maine, USA) fine architectural heritage through the creation of a historic district commission, the promotion of stewardship, and the use of protective covenants.
