| Introducing an unique educational opportunity for students of all ages!
Maine Preservation is pleased to have teamed with Tilbury House, Publishers and Maine author William H. Bunting to bring to life a fascinating era in our economic history - from the Civil War to the end of World War I. A Day's Work: A Sampler of Historic Maine Photographs, 1860-1920, Parts I and II, in tandem with specially prepared middle school study guides and a traveling exhibit, provides a unique teaching and learning opportunity - linked directly to the Maine Learning Results . This innovative trio of teaching and learning opportunities has been made possible thanks to Mr. Bunting's well-researched works and the creativity of Jennifer Elliott of Tilbury House, Publishers. The information presented in this website is intended to introduce the browser to the resources and stimulate ideas about how you might use these materials to stimulate young minds to learn more about their history and irreplaceable past. First, the books themselves are both delightful and compelling - loaded with rare photographs and presented in a penetrating and informative narrative style ideally suited to each topic. These books are critically acclaimed and are offered for sale through Maine Preservation in both hardback and soft cover with discounts to Maine Preservation members and teachers. Second, from both volumes of A Day's Work sprang a series of excellently prepared study guides for use at the middle school level, titled "A Day's Work in Maine." Thanks to a grant from the Maine Humanities Council and the assistance of Social Studies teachers in Maine (particularly Rae Pelletier of Boothbay Harbor Middle School) these multi-disciplined study guides are linked directly to the Maine Learning Results, making their use in many different classrooms all across the state easy, fun, and very rewarding. Third, an exciting and handsome traveling exhibit - guaranteed to generate comments from crowds of inquisitive minds - was created by Tilbury House, Publishers using a selection of the best historic photographs found in both volumes of A Day's Work. The accompanying captions are informative and though provoking, and are ideal for middle school through adult learners. The display panels were designed for use on tabletops and reserved by contacting Tilbury House, Publishers at 800-582-8227. We invite you read on and open your own doors to a deeper understanding of what life was truly like in Maine's pre-petroleum, post-Civil War era - when Maine was a vital, productive, shrewd, savvy and well-connected society.
