"A Day's Work in Maine"
Study Guide and Exhibit

"A Day’s Work in Maine" is an ambitious presentation of the challenges of work in the 19th Century. It offers teachers and students from a number of disciplines (English, Math, Social Studies, Science and Technology, and Visual and Performing Arts) to apply their valuable skills to fascinating photos of work in Maine in the 19th Century. A study guide of thoughtful questions stimulates discussion. Students are urged compare and contrast their observations and local research to the work challenges of earlier times. Assessment forms are provided. This material is for Middle School level.

A traveling display is also available to help in stimulating interest in the project. There are so many topics to choose from that the display offers an opportunity for teachers and students to choose. Just a few of the topics include ice cutting, sawing lumber, moving buildings, farming, harvesting granite, grocery stores, lobstering shipbuilding, paper mills, railroad and the roles for women in the workplace.
